I am using these in my wall unit in my bedroom. I have a wall unit that was given to me that I cherish very much (from my mom). There is a part of the unit on the bottom that had a piece of wood to hold other things, but for some reason, I am unable to find it.I purchased these tension shelves and they are really good. It takes about 5 seconds to put them on and they are good to go. I am not sure about how much weight it can hold up to, but I have a Sony Playstation (yes, I still have that - I also still have a Sega Genesis and a Wii) that I put on top along with all the accessories to contain it and keep it neat.I will be getting some more to put in my very narrow kitchen cabinet for storage as well.
This thing is a BITCH to set up by yourself...you need at least 3 arms. One holding the shelf end into the wall, one keeping the constantly-sliding-in-and-out tension rods held tightly to the other wall, and one twisting the fasteners to tighten the whole thing in place. This is definitely a two person job, it took me like three days of trying, giving up, and throwing it into the corner and walking away, before somehow I finally got it up. Beware if you live alone, you need someone on hand to help you get this in place or you're in for a frustrating ride. However, once you get it up and it's secure (and level, ugh) it literally doesn't move and it's a great product! I have things on the shelf portion and I have hangers holding a couple of jackets I wear most frequently on the open rods. One is leather, the other is suede, and combined with the storage boxes on the shelf portion, this thing is fantastic and super locked into place even when holding some heavy-ish jackets. It ain't going nowhere. And thank god because if I have to put it up again by myself I will scream.
Easy to install tension shelf. Comes with all you need. Once set up correctly it holds a lot of weight. I find that getting one about 8 inches more than you need help with stability and weight it will hold, metal tubes retract into one another adding to the overall support. Shelf build is pretty good for an import item.
I have a Cape Cod and my upstairs closet goes into the eves on one side so there is a lot of dead space that is awkward to get to. I felt putting a tension rod across just before where the eve starts to slope down would allow me better storage to put the off season clothes there, giving me more hanging space. When I saw this double rod with the shelf on top I thought this would be great since I could also put some things on top of the shelf. But like most of the other reviews said, it is very difficult to pull the rods to the desired length, hold them in place snugly, and turn the screws to tighten it down. I finally got it in place after a lot of fumbling with it, I started to put some clothes on it along with a 6-shelf fabric hanging storage bag which I put all my sweaters in. I had 13 summer cardigans & dresses hanging on the rods and about 6 sweaters in the hanging bag when the whole thing collapsed. It was so aggravating! I thought about just returning the shelf right then and there, but I decided to try to get it to work again. This time I measured the length I needed and secured the rods in place and began to put it on an angle until it seemed to "stick" to the wall, then I used a rubber mallet to gently hammer it down till it was level and strongly secured to the wall. I'm still not completely confident that it will stay put and I placed a shoe box under the hanging storage bag so that the full weight isn't pulling on the rod, and I plan on tying a piece of cord and tying it to the rod and attaching it to a nail that I'll place into the header above to give it more support. It's a lot of effort to get this thing to work, but if you have the patience and someone to assist you (which I didn't), then I'd say give it a shot. Just don't put a lot of weight on it, it's definitely not made for that.
We live in a shoebox condo and I'm always looking for ways to gain more storage in any spot I can. While restocking TP on the top shelf of our linen closet, I noticed that we still had a good foot of vertical space available to us. It would be difficult to reach for regular stuff but it would be nice for things like light bulbs or lesser used items. I didn't want to drill into the walls if I didn't have to so this tension rod shelf was the perfect solution. Now we store bulbs, wipes, extra rolls of TP, etc in space that wasn't previously used and were able to put away all of the little things stacking up outside of the closet. It's been up for a month with no issues. You do need to make sure you situate it where you need it to go and do as much tightening for a solid base. Once you do that, it should be good to go. May get a few more to utilize under the stair storage.
[ORIGINAL 9/14/21] As others mentioned, the screws tighten over the rods so it will leave dents. I can see how it would be easier with two people, though I was able to assemble by myself for ~32" length between a bookshelf and the wall. I didn't want to risk heavy items so I put a couple of bags, a helmet, and a couple of light boxes on it that just barely spanned the shelf's width. Some people complained about having only two rods versus five rods spanning the entire length, but what you see is what you get. I think I saw someone put this shelf in a space where one rod had to be shorter than the other, so it's versatile. I like it enough that I plan to get another one.[UPDATE 10/28/21] Suddenly in the middle of the night it fell. It's been about six weeks and there was less than 15# of items spread across the shelf. I just put it up again after work this evening. If it falls again, it might not be worth it to put up the shelf every 6 weeks![UPDATE 1/16/22] I went out to attend something and when I came back the shelf was down. It has been about 80 days since I last put it up. This time I just put light things on it (see photo of yoga blocks, dish pan, empty tote) and will report if it falls. But yeah, not sure how others are able to put detergent on it or simply toss things on it (I place the items gently). I want to buy another one because the concept is great but should try another brand/seller.
Its amazing. Just make sure you know the exact location before you put the stickersI looove it
Although I love Hi-Rise Condo's, for all the reasons of a Downtown City Dweller, Cupboard / Storage Space is always a challenge. Thank goodness, with a little research and shopping around, there's a myriad of products which allow one to shove in inordinate amount of whatever neatly and organized into one's Cupboards. This product is a great idea, cuz I was able to put it just above the main shelf in my Hall Closets; to add another bit of storage for Hats, Gloves, Scarves and the like. Easy to assemble, sturdy, and 'Does The Trick'....
So happy with this. Sturdy and fits great in a large closet in our RV. Stays in place while travelling. Was concerned it was overpriced, and while I still think it was a bit pricy for what it is, but I am happy it is a quality product.
A great solution for those that want to optimise their closet spaces
We got these tension shelves after moving to an apartment with very little storage. Currently we are using one at the very top of our hallway closet to create a little extra space to eventually hold our camping gear. The shelves were easy to put together, shipped quickly, and seem to be very sturdy for what they are. If you're in a pinch, I would recommend it.I do wish they were slightly less expensive, given that they seem to be made primarily if plastic and aluminum.
