This is such a great quality dehydrated dog food, my little chi-mix absolutely loves it and yes it takes a bit more extra time to prepare and mix together, but I enjoy the little routine now I have preparing every single meal for him. I recommend adding in your own favorites like some blueberries, salmon, pumpkin, honey, etc. Your doggie will love it! Highly recommended!
The honest kitchen Embark is a product I decided to try for Charlie since he has a sensitive stomach. He eats raw and dehydrated foods and only has major issues with kibble. We stopped using them about a year ago. I have noticed a huge change in his body. He looks healthier, his fur is super soft, he rarely throws up anymore. He was eating another dehydrated food that he really enjoyed but the cost was just not beneficial to my pocket. I tried a different dehydrated food after that and Charlie actually turned his nose up to it. It had a very strong fatty smell. This is a grain free power type food with ground up turkey and veggies. At first he was unsure about it. I do allow him to choose which food he wants to eat. He has been picking The honest kitchen since day 3. Yesterday when I asked him which food he wanted he actually got on top of the box! It is easy to make. You just add very warm water and let it sit. I have noticed at first that he was pooing a little more then usual and read that some people were having the same issue because they did not allow it to sit in water long enough. Now I have been letting it sit for a couple of hours before feeding him. It has made a big difference. You can add more or less water depending on how you want to feed. I usually make it a little pasty so that he has something to do. I do still feed him raw at least once a week because that is good for keeping his teeth clean. I believe I am going to continue to feed this since he really loves it and friends of mine recommended I try it. This is human grade food which is awesome. That means you can eat it. I would never eat kibble though. Another reason why I like feeding this is because I don't need to add extra vitamins and minerals and coconut oil. Its all included. Charlie totally recommends this! This is a big box. I have been using it for a while and there is still plenty left.
We recently acquired a AC registered puppy and had one heck of a time finding a food that did not upset her tummy. I tried and tried every brand out there, discussed with the vet, tried medications to stop puppy's loose stools, but nothing helped. I eventually resorted to going to a high end pet store in town and learned about Honest Kitchen. I was surprised at the price, but since I even tried making my own raw dog food from recipes online, I figured it had to be a little easier to but the dehydrated. I seriously cannot tell you the difference this food has made in our puppy. She is healthier than when we got her, the vet is thrilled with her perfect weight, and she is smells great, has great breath, and little tartar on her teeth. She gobbles this food down and LOVES IT!!! Its easy to prepare and I put her servings in little plastic containers with lids and keep them in the fridge so its ready when we are. On top of that, we started feeding it to our senior dog who we really thought was close to death, and she is a new dog! Her energy level has increased, her alertness is sharp, and her coat is beautiful. I wish I had found this for her sooner as it has helped clear up some skin allergies and paw chewing. Please don't be discouraged by the negative reviews you may read on this site. This food is a godsend and we will use it as long as they make it! Thank you Honest Kitchen!!!
My dogs have tried all the flavors of the grain free dehydrated food. They were eating the fish one for a long time but then I wanted to try a different flavor because I thought they were getting bored with their food. First I'd like to say, they did not like any of the other flavors - beef or chicken. I had to give those away. However, I took a chance on ordering the Turkey and it was a hit. I'm glad, too, because I went through a lot of money wasting this food. They wouldn't even eat the fish one anymore and I had ordered a 10 lb box. Not sure what makes the Turkey one so special but they love it so much that they ditched the fish one. This food has dramatically improved their coat. It took about 2 months but we did see a dramatic improvement in their skin and cost, not to mention how much they love it. For anyone starting out trying this food, I recommend trying a small box of the fish and turkey. The turkey one will swell more when you add semi boiling water to it. The fish one not as much. When my dogs first started eating this food they acted like they had never eaten in their lives, so be prepared cuz your dog will love it. He/she might look at you funny at first but then they'll gobble it down like geeze did I die n go to heaven?! Lol... For me, I still mix a little bit of kibble with it. Remember, this stuff is very nutritious so you might have to cut back on their food slightly.
My boxer girl does great on all the grain free HK Recipes. I have tried them all before settling on only the grain free since discovering she has allergies to grains AND CHICKEN. If allot of you are noticing allergic type reactions or loose stools (grains will do this too), just try taking them off any dog food containing chicken as it is a highly known allergen and you will probably see good results. Spoke with someone which had been having a terrible time with allergies with her 2 basset hound puppies which included chewing on their front legs till they were bald along with stomach issues, etc. I asked her what she was feeding and she said cooked chicken, rice, vegetables with added vitamins. She had been to the vet which of course sold her on the food they were selling and gave her some strong shampoos, which didnt help at all. In fact it got worse. I told her to take them immediately off the chicken and in just a few days she called me and said the dogs had done a complete turnaround and were doing so much better.HK grain free/chicken free are the only recipes I currently use. They are very good and in my opinion, the best of it's type out there. One thing I dont like is not knowing what % of meat content exactly is in each each box. You really do have to add your own additional meat. I add turkey and rotate with grass fed (and as organic as I can find) raw beef. She is almost 12 years old and the vet thinks she looks fantastic. I do have my own carefully calculated vitamin mixture which I include also am & pm (she's my child :).I wish HK would take out the parsley stems and just use the leaves if they could do that. The stems are like straw and sharp as daggers, especially the larger ones which I pick out. Have contacted them before about this and it was really bad in the "Zeal" product which is the fish, however they dont include it in the "Embark"Ok, I'm off my soap box for now.....
I have a 10 year old Westie named Maggie. I rescued her when she was 3 and she came to our family with many health issues including untreated Addison's disease, recurring urinary tract infections, infected paws, excessive drinking, weeping eyes, etc. I have tried many dog foods to address her allergies that my vet believes may be, at least in part, due to food. None have really helped relieve her symptoms. I lived with constant anxiety that every lick, cough, lethargic attitude, etc would land us at the vet yet again, and that she'd never feel "well". She was diagnosed with stage II/III mast cell cancer in January and has had 2 surgeries and a course of chemo. When she was diagnosed, I began researching diets for dogs with cancer. Most recommended a grain-free, low carb diet. I switched her to Taste of the Wild. Then it was recalled and I discovered that many dog foods were made in the same plants and could therefore be contaminated even if they had high quality ingredients. I tried Evo, California Natural, Blue Buffalo, etc. She liked some, wouldn't eat others, and none seemed to make a difference in her health. So I went back online and found a site called thetruthaboutpetfood and purchased a list of recommended dog foods that the site owner researched and deemed high quality. I found The Honest Kitchen brand of dog food and purchased Embark because it was low carb and grain-free. I liked the fact that all of the ingredients were safe and human grade (not that I've ever been tempted to eat it!). Maggie LOVES it. After several weeks on the food, I noticed positive changes. Her fur is pure white and not greasy. She has no allergic symptoms. Her black splotches on her skin are turning pink. She doesn't excessively drink water. She's more alert and happier than she's ever been. Her eyes don't weep which is HUGE. As stated in other reviews, her bowel movements have increased but it's worth it to me to have a health, happy dog. This is a long way to say that, for Maggie, Embark has been life-changing.
I had high hopes for the Honest Kitchen Grain Free Turkey Recipe. My dogs love the Beef and Chicken--both with and without grain, although I only buy the grain-free anymore. My dogs love turkey everything, so I just knew that they would be all over this. I was even saying to them this morning, "oh guys you have no idea the treat that is in store for you!" When I opened the box it was very green. Startled me a bit but, oh well, dogs don't care what color their food is, right? So then I prepared it according to the directions, and the first problem is that the directions tell you to put way more water in than you actually need. After about 5 minutes it was still too wet so I had to add more product. It still didn't get to the consistency the other flavors do, so I decided this was as good as it was going to get and I scooped it into their bowls, and that's when I noticed how slimy it was. REALLY SLIMY. If you are of a certain age you remember a movie called "Green Slime". That's what popped into my head at that moment. But none of this would matter if my dogs would eat it. One dog did, because he'll eat anything--he eats cardboard after all. But the other dog, she wouldn't touch it. Laid down next to the bowl and stared at me for I don't know how long. Finally she gave up and left it. I just tossed it out. I have a whole box of this stuff. Maybe I'll make it for the dog who eats cardboard and just not give it to the other dog--I'll give her the chicken or the beef. But one thing is for certain, I won't buy it again, and I caution the reader against buying this flavor.
I have an 18 month old 70-pound goldendoodle. I started him on Merrick Grain Free Puppy Plate and then switched to Merrick Cowboy Cookout when he was older. He did very well on that food. He was lean and energetic. His coat was shiny and flexible. However, the expense of feeding 4.5 cans per day was high. I sought to modify his diet a little to bring down the monthly expense. The Honest Kitchen Embark seemed perfect. It was supposedly a high quality human-grade dehydrated food. It was expensive, but not as expensive as the Merrick canned food I had been feeding. I switched over within two weeks. My goldendoodle seemed to like the Embark food. However, within just a short time, I saw some troubling changes. The amount of droppings increased dramatically. I noticed a lot of undigested material in the droppings even though I soaked the food overnight. The most dramatic change was in his once beautiful coat. It became alarmingly dry, dull and brittle. It started matting everywhere. I usually use the dog's coat as a reflection of general health and I was not pleased with what I was seeing. As I analyzed the Honest Kitchen Embark food, It appeared to be very low in meat, protein and fat - something my dog was getting with the Merrick. In fact, I seriously doubt the protein claims with Honest Kitchen. I even think the Dog Food Advisor site is wrong in their analysis. I can barely see any meat chips at all in the food. I think most of the protein is coming from plant sources - not meat. This is definitely (maybe almost exclusively) a plant based food.I had to start supplementing with Merrick again. I began by reducing the Embark and adding in 1 can of Cowboy Cookout per day. I noticed a slight difference, but not enough to satisfy me. So, I am currently adding in 2 cans of Merrick per day. This is now about half Embark and half Merrick. My dog's coat is starting to return it's full, shiny, strong, smooth condition.I am not opposed to some plant material, but I think the Embark is just way too heavy on plants and very low on meat and fats. I am still experimenting with the right balance, but I certainly needed to supplement (quite heavily) the Embark in order for my dog to get what I consider to be an adequate amount of protein and fat. I feed my goldendoodle about 2.5 cups of reconstituted Embark, 1 can of Merrick Cowboy Cookout and 1 can of Merrick Texas Beef. So far that ratio seems to be working out adequately.Although I DO believe Honest Kitchen is a high quality dehydrated food, I cannot give a high recommendation because of the very high plant content and low protein and fat content. I think it's too unbalanced for a healthy dog diet. With supplementation, however, I think it could be a part of a good diet. I give this food 3 stars.Rick
Received in great condition, delivery as promised! Great food for both my goldies, help to fill up my senior dog a little.
My cocker spaniel puppy likes it! Reliable seller!
My dogs love this food. One of my dogs had allergies for so many years and she would get recurrent ear and paws infections, she is been eating honest kitchen embark for the past year and I can totally see the difference in her, she has also lost some weight. I add a little bit of coconut oil to her food so she can get more fatty acids. Shipping was great.
My dog has been on The Honest Kitchen Embark for years now and it's really good for her gastrointestinal issues.
My dog absolutely like it and I also like the high real food ingredients of this product. It's worth to pay a bit more to have a healthier dog!
