This is an amazing knife for the money. I have gone through two of them so far. I own Emerson, benchmade, Zero Tolerance, and a bunch of other brands. The RAT 1 is usually what I carry. It isn't superior to those knives, but I also can't replace those for 30 bucks.The steel is great. It is quite corrosion resistant, takes a very nice edge, sharpens without much hassle, and stays sharp for way longer than a semi-stainless should. The tip is thin, but takes a lot of abuse to break, the hinge has copper and teflon (or some kind of lubricious white plastic) washers, the lockup is precise and strong, the coating (I got the black one) is very durable. The pocket clip is secure and robust, and the scales are drilled for all 4 positions if you prefer something other than factory configuration.This knife punches WAY out of its weight class. I recommend this to everyone who is looking to get a pocket knife who doesn't want to spend big money. I'm an Emerson fanboy, but this knife gets more mileage in my pocket than any of my other knives, and I have fewer and fewer nicer knives in the rotation. If i need a pry bar, or just have to impress the local mall ninja I will carry one of my Emersons... but if I'm just going out or if I need to do some work, I'm going to bring the RAT 1.Honestly, If the zombie apocalypse (or whatever flavor apocalypse you're into) happened, I wouldn't hesitate to throw a RAT 1 in my pocket and feel pretty good about it (compared to other folders, not like... ONLY the RAT 1. It's awesome, but not THAT awesome)

I have purchased two of these knives, that's how impressed I am with them. One is my primary EDC knife, the other I purchased for my thirteen year old son to use in Scouting. Both are black handled but mine has the black coated blade so we can tell them apart. About the coating, yes, it is flaking off, though not as bad as some other reviewers seem to be doing.About the knife itself let me say that this is simply the best designed folding knife I have ever owned. I have knives from Spyderco, Buck, KaBar, Schrade and Gerber and this knife is my favorite (though the KaBar Dozier is a very close second). The handle is unrivaled comfort-wise amongst my folders and even bests many of my fixed blade knives. The full flat grind AUS8 blade takes a wicked sharp edge easily and holds it very well. My blade is perfectly centered when closed and has zero play in it when open. Opening this blade with one hand is easy and as quick as any assisted opening blade I have used.If I were to pick nits (and I will) the only issues I have with the knife are: 1, it could be just a touch less heavy. At five ounces it is certainly noticeable in the pocket. 2, the liner lock on my example is at about 75% when the blade is open. This is not a 'problem' per se, but a concern. Hopefully as the knife ages the lock bar doesn't continue to move further out towards the far side of the blade, as this could potentially decrease it's ability to effectively lock open the blade. However, this is an issue I have only with the black coated blade, the un-coated bladed knife I gave to my son doesn't do this, and the lock bar is set at just under 50% of the blade.All in all whenever anybody asks me to recommend a quality and affordable folding knife (I have a bit of a reputation as a "knife geek" among my friends), this is the knife I recommend. Certainly one can spend more money on a good folder, but the return on your dollars is a diminishing one. The materials, design and fit and finish on this knife are excellent. My own experience is that properly treated AUS8 steel performs very comparably to the far more expensive VG10 used in much more expensive knives like Spydercos.Really, for under thirty bucks you get a knife that can go head-to-head with pretty much any 100$ folder. Why not get one?

Is it the best knife ever? No, of course not. Is it the best knife for its price? Probably. Unbelievable value for the money. I’d like to see them add more texture to the handle scales, or even upgrade to g10 and charge a few dollars more, but that’s just my preference. IF YOU BUY THIS KNIFE, LOOK INTO THE “SNAGGLETOOTH TACTICAL WAVE OPENER”. Turns a 30$ knife into a 80$ knife, at least for my purposes. If you can find a cold steel voyager for the same price, I’d say go with that, but if you’re looking for a high quality work knife that you don’t have to worry about breaking or losing, the RAT 1 is a killer option. I don’t carry knives for self defense, I carry them for work, and the rat 1 will have a permanent place in my rotation now. If I expect it to be a light duty day, I’ll probably take one of my nicer folders, if it’s going to be a dirty muddy day in the rain and lots of gritty work, I’ll take the rat 1.[update] well, after putting it through its paces and using it hard for a few days I’m even more impressed. At first I wasn’t a fan of the nylon scales because they were smooth and not very grippy, but now I like them and understand why they did it this way. There’s no issue with grip because the handle shape is very ergonomic and locks into your hand, but the smooth scales allow you to really use the knife for long periods without getting hot spots or torn up hands. It also helps keep your pocket from getting shredded against the clip. Anyone who carries a cold steel in g10 knows what I’m talking about. Also the checkered pattern looks like g10, so you still get the cool factor if that’s your thing. I will be purchasing several more of these in the other materials like carbon fiber and maybe even the assisted auto in g10. Very satisfied with this purchase, this is my new favorite sub-80$ blade and I’m sure I will go through quite a few of them in the years to come.

I was told that this is a relatively unknown knife that deserves more attention. It is relatively comparable to others in size, weight, design, and sharpness. Thought I'd give it a try and put it through its paces. First impression? It held its own and did surprisingly well. The edge dulled somewhat but with a field sharpening stone, the edge bounced back. With more dedicated stones, the edge came back to razor sharp. Solid built although I'm not impressed by the overall length. But line? It's a keeper and a fantastic knife to have in your car's toolbox or, in my case my go-to bag for outdoor use. Easily adaptable to most applications and strong enough to complete desired tasks with little or no worries. Minus one star? Has some issues that definitely can be improved upon but that can be more personal choices and is most certainly not a deal breaker. Need to find out other Ontario knives I've been avoiding for all this time, if this knife is a representative of the quality of this knife.

5 year review. This knife is a beast. Aus8 steel for ease of sharpening. No need to make a rookie mistake and get any tougher steel like D2 if you need to send it in to be sharpened. This knife has served me well for 5 years. Holds an edge pretty well, pocket clip has seen high mileage but screws never loosened. This is your knife, right here.

Nice knife,so far so good.This was my second knife from Taiwan in less than a week.I'm impressed with both of them but the Ontario was a nice surprise.When I opened it I was surprised that the blade was so shiny and lo and behold there was a thin coating of oil on the Aus8 blade.Impressive.Very sharp out of the box and I guess I didn't read up on it too much because it was more of an impulsive buy so I was surprised at the size of the blade which is very good sized,I was expecting something smaller,considering they very low price.I've always read great things about Ontario Knives,but have never purchased one.The RAT line is well priced,even more so on Amazon and I've found knives from Taiwan to be good bargains and well made to boot.The carry on the knife is fairly low in my pocket,with the knife having the tip down.You can change the pocket clip fairly easily with a small torx wrench.The edge is hair shaving sharp.with a nicely shaped drop point edge that offers a fairly large cutting surface.The scales are zytel and not the grippiest surface.It would be nice to have G-10 on it but for the price the zytel works o.k.The opening studs are on both sides of the blade and with a little oil and a few minutes of opening and closing,the knife opens like a charm.If you have delicate hands,the liner lock might do you some damage but I don't think this series of knives are made for the delicate hands crowd.Besides,breaking in a knife is half the fun of buying a new blade,so don't let that keep you away from buying this knife.It's well made and the AUS8 steel is not too common to find on a sub 25.00 dollar knife.

I am more of a fixed-blade knife user myself. All of the folders I have ever owned were cheap throw-aways. I did not have much confidence that a folding knife could feel as tough as this RAT folder.PROS:1) Very Sharp - Slices through rope, wood, electric cables, cloth, paracord, shaves arm hair with ease2) Keeps and edge - stayed shaving sharp after I put it to use and tested it3) Easy to sharpen - a fine grit stone and leather belt strop had it just as sharp as it came4) No wiggle or play - There is no give to the blade whatsoever, feels safe and sturdy in the hand5) Easy to open with 1 hand - after breaking the knife in it will open as fast as I can flick my thumb.6) Sturdy pocket clip - The clip can be put in 4 different positions and the 3 screws keep it in tight.7) Blade shape - I am a huge fan of ESEE fixed blades. It's the same shape.CONS1) Finish - the finish is painted on and it wears off very easy. It looks and acts like a cheap finish compared to my other knives. I take care of my tools so I am not worried about rust.2) Grip - I haven't had to use under slippery conditions, but the grip does seem like it would be a weak point. It basically feels like the untextured portions of a glock.OVERALL, the pros heavily out weight the cons for me. At this price I am more than happy with my purchase and would highly recommend this knife to anyone who is looking for a usable, durable, every day knife.

I will continue to buy this knife. You cannot beat this knife at this price point. The blade is very to sharpen and the thickness of the blade makes this a very sturdy and robust folding knife.

Ich hab das RAT 1 mittlerweile seit knapp 6 Jahren und liebe es immernoch! Lässt sich gut nachschärfen auf einem Lederriemen und ist sehr gut zu pflegen da schnell auseinander- und wieder zusammengebaut. Der AUS8 Stahl ist etwas weicher, was der Instandhaltung zugute kommt da keine teuren Schleifwerkzeuge benötigt werden. Zur Schmierung nutze ich das Blue Lube von Benchmade, klappt super und hält lange an. Der Klingenstand ist nicht perfekt mittig, dafür ist der Klingengang umso smoother- es signalisiert regelrecht dass es Bock hat was zu machen wenn man es auf flippt😃! Ohne jetzt viele Worte zu verlieren. Das RAT 1 ist ein sehr zuverlässiges Arbeitstier welches mit guter Verarbeitung und Materialien daher kommt. Habe noch sehr viele andere Messer hauptsächlich Cold Steel aber das Ontario RAT 1 ist mein Go to EDC💪💯

RAT2は２本目だけど、カラーを見て即注文しました。すごく綺麗なので、ガシガシ使うのは気が引けて、まだコピー用紙しか切ってませんが。笑かっこいいです。

El acabado es muy bueno, la calidad del material es de primera, el tamaño de la hoja, dimensiones, el filo es muy bueno de fabrica pues lo probé con los vellos de mi brazo y rasuró sin problemas, no se de aceros pero el material de la hoja luce de buena calidad y retiene el filo, la ergonomía en general es muy buena, se sostiene con comodidad, no se resbala, en un principio tuve que practicar para abrirla rápido usado una mano, pero ya lo logré. Llego en tiempo, bien empacada, la atención del vendedor y seguimiento de envío es muy buena, la relación de calidad -precio es excelente, es mi EDC para trabajos rudos.

Canivete excelente!Veio muito bem afiado, a tinta na lâmina sai com um pouco de facilidade, mas tirando isso o canivete é muito show .
