So far, so good with two of these smoke detectors. I replaced my awesome Nest Protect smoke detectors when they expired after 10 years with these. The First Alert SC5 that is the recommended follow-up to the Nest Protect has many, many reports of false alarms on the web (check Reddit and other sites). So I decided to go with these because I could link them to my Ring app to get notifications without having to install yet another app on my phone. The process was easy. After installation to the wiring in my house, I restored power and the detectors stay in Wi-Fi setup mode for 15 minutes, which gave me enough time to set up both in the Ring app. Make sure you keep track of the bar codes on the manual on each and where you installed the corresponding detector (if you bought more than one). You will need to scan the barcode on the manual or on the back of the detector during setup. If you don't keep track of the bar codes on the manuals and where you installed each, you will need to remove the smoke detector to get to the proper barcode on back so you can name the detector properly (hallway, kitchen, etc.). It has been about two weeks and I haven't had any false alarms, thankfully. That is always my worst fear when I get new detectors. These were a decent value at the time for app-connected smoke detectors and the compatibility with Ring's home monitoring is a plus for those who subscribe (I do not because I use SimpliSafe, who does not have wired smoke detectors, but I will still get notices on my phone if these go off). Recommended! I will update if I ever get a false alarm.
I wasn’t aware when I bought this that it was part of the Ring system, and honestly, that’s on me for not paying attention. But it turned out to be a nice surprise. I had an old FireX smoke alarm that the state fire inspector said needed replacing. He mentioned Kidde had taken over FireX, so I got an adapter for about $22. This Kidde Smart Smoke Detector fit right in and worked perfectly. When I set it up, I realized I needed the Ring app. If you already have any Ring devices, this is a great addition. It was super easy to set up, took about five seconds in the app, and now I’m actually tempted to explore more Ring products. The notifications are customizable, and it gave me a great impression of the Ring ecosystem. In the end, I can only give it five stars. It fits perfectly, went up easily, and now I just wish I had more Ring stuff to go with it. If you have any Ring products, this is a fantastic addition.
Easy to install. Works as intended.
Fairly easy install and app integration. Now I just need to do the rest!
Appears to work fine and integrated seamlessly with Ring app. But I was bothered that Kidde did not supply mounting hardware (screws and anchors). That's fine if you are replacing an existing unit, but if this is a new work installation you've got to come up with the appropriate hardware.A pair of screws and anchors probably costs a nickel when bought in bulk, and I've found such parts included in alarms costing a fraction of what Kidde charges for this model. This left me with the nagging doubt that, if the manufacturer is so focused on cutting costs that they omit basic industry-standard mounting hardware, did they similarly shave costs in areas a customer can't as readily see (like durability of electronic components)??? I obviously have not way to detect if that happened (no pun intended) but a smoke alarm is one of those products where reliability and performance are key and where the user wants to trust the product. I have bought Kidde alarms and extinguishers in the past and have never had to put them to the test (in a fire), but Kidde's decision to save a nickel on mounting hardware unnecessarily planted a seed of doubt in my mind about potential longevity and performance.I had originally intended the two detectors I bought to replace older non-Ring detectors, but have decided to keep the old ones running at least for now alongside the Kidde units--all because of the decision to omit two screws and anchors.
Love these things. Very easy to setup and they just work. Ring has this down for setting it up.
I replaced 5 hardwired, and linked, smoke detectors. I used 4 standard Kidde hardwired and one I replace with the WiFi Kidde detector. The instructions were clear. The color coded wires matched my original wiring. Other than being on a ladder, the installation was easy. The original detectors were on a lighting circuit so installing during the day helped. I downloaded the free Kidde WiFi app and followed the instructions and the nice lady that lives in the WiFi detector congratulated me on getting it all installed and working correctly. They look really nice and clean.
If I could I would give this product 0 stars. Worst purchase... ever. We bought 5 of these detectors for our house because we wanted to connect them to our Ring App. None of them work with the Ring App (even though that is the only app, per their instructions, we can use). The "discover" blue light never comes on despite our following the steps outlined in the Ring app and online. Horrible product. Kind of expensive and it does not work as advertised. Save your money and frustration and buy a different brand of smoke detector.
